Why this Hike
This iconic Victorian hike to one of the highest summits in the state is not to be underestimated and is perfect for hikers looking for a challenge. This walk which is located in the Alpine National Park takes you along the Razorback, an extremely challenging and rewarding track to the summit of Mount Feathertop (1922m).
Track Notes & Overview
2 Days, 1 Night – 23KM
Day one – Diamantina Hut to Federation Hut via Mount Feathertop (12.8KM)
Starting from Diamantina Hut along the Great Alpine Road, this walk follows the Razor Back as it winds its way along the ridge line. As you walk you will hike up and down sections of steep and often windy track, eventually reaching Twin knobs and High knob which sit right before the junction with Diamantina Spur. At the junction you will take a left, following the track until the Feathertop Summit track turnoff. From here you can do the 3km round trip to summit Mount Feathertop and return to spend the night at Federation Hut (500m from the junction).
Day two – Federation Hut to Diamantina Hut (10.2KM)
Return from Federation hut back along the Razor Back to Diamantina Hut to complete the hike.
*Please note that this hike is an extremely dangerous hike when not prepared. Weather can change rapidly and winds can be extreme. Make sure to share your plans with someone you trust before you set off and never be afraid to turn back when the weather gets too dangerous.
